FREE AGENCY UPDATE: Sabres acquire veteran forward Rob Niedermayer

TSN and ESPN insiders are reporting that the Sabres have signed veteran forward to a one-year contract reportedly worth $1 million dollars. The 35 year old has played 17 seasons in the NHL and won a Stanley Cup in Anaheim. Last season, Niedermayer played in 71 games with the New Jersey Devils, recording 10 goals and 12 assists. He has also played with Florida and Calgary.  Niedermayer played for Lindy Ruff while with the Panthers when Ruff was an assistant coach.

While the acquisition of Niedermayer is far from the blockbuster deal many fans had hoped for, it will bring some veteran leadership and toughness to the team and Niedermayer’s defensive and penalty killing skills will be a welcome addition.
