Drumroll please….and the Sabres sign….Jordan Leopold

Well, the Sabres did not make a blockbuster move as many fans hoped for but instead inked Jordan Leopold to a 3 year, $9 million deal. The blue liner played for Florida and Pittsburgh this year, racking up 11 goals and 15 assists in 81 games.  Leopold has decent size at 6’1 and 200 lbs, but has been plagued by injuries ranging from a hip ailment, lacerated leg, pneumonia and multiple concussions during his 7 year NHL career. Leopold was knocked out of the Penguins first round series with a concussion when he collided with Senators’ defenseman Andy Sutton in Game 2 but returned in Game 2 of the semifinal round against the Montreal Canadiens.

Leopold might help partially offset the loss of Lydman and Tallinder today, but ultimately its hard to see the Sabres as a better team with this acquisition.  Free agency is far from over but the Sabres must address the power play and the lack of top 6 center with size if they want to make a genuine run at the cup next season.  More of the same from Regier, but when the same strategy doesn’t work for over a decade, isn’t it time to change it up and make a “big splash”?
